“Read with Me” Program
Mrs. Blaire McCarthy and her dog Macs are part of our “Read with Me” Program!
Mrs. McCarthy, our former St. Joseph’s School Guidance Counselor for 15 years and her dog Macs, are a registered Pet Partner therapy team. Mrs. McCarthy’s three sons graduated from St. Joe’s years ago and she is very grateful for the moral and educational foundation that her son’s received there. She wanted to give back in a unique way. Knowing that her dog Macs loves people and especially children, she decided to bring Macs to St. Joe’s to participate in the “Read with Me” program.
The “Read with Me” program is designed for children who are having difficulty with fluency. The studies show that when these children read to a therapy dog with the handler present, they are able to increase their literacy skills. Research indicates that the children are better able to focus, are more relaxed and less intimidated, and have more fun reading to an animal.
Macs is a six year old Cockapoo who visits St. Joe’s to work with the students on their reading fluency. He is hypoallergenic, very friendly, and loves children. He really enjoys his volunteer job and loves the new friends he has made at St. Joe’s!
